Potential US-Iran Talks Could See Breakthrough Despite Tehran’s Hesitation
"Efforts are underway on the part of Pakistan, Türkiye, and Egypt to woo all stakeholders, mainly Iran, which is still reluctant to hold talks without certain guarantees," a ministry official said.
Senior Pakistani officials, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, are reportedly in "constant" contact with Iranian leadership in an effort to persuade them to participate, the official added. The source spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter.
The official noted that Tehran is "still sticking to its demands," requesting assurances that there would be no future military actions against Iran, that its missile program would be excluded from the talks, and that Iran would be compensated for losses "inflicted" by the US and Israel.
Sharif stated on Tuesday that Islamabad is "ready" to host "meaningful and conclusive" talks between the US and Iran to achieve a "comprehensive settlement" to end the conflict in the Middle East.
As part of its diplomatic initiative, Pakistan’s army chief Gen. Asim Munir also held discussions with US President Donald Trump on Sunday and has proposed that the country host a potential summit involving senior US and Iranian officials.
