Pakistan, US launch two-week joint counter-terrorism exercises
The latest round marks the 13th installment of the bilateral training program, titled Inspired Gambit-2026, which started on Friday at the National Counter Terrorism Centre located in the Pabbi area of Kharian district. The exercise brings together forces from both countries to train side by side in specialized counter-terrorism operations.
Military officials said the drills are designed to deepen coordination and operational compatibility by exchanging experience in combating terrorism. As outlined in the statement, "The exercise is aimed at enhancing mutual understanding and interoperability through the sharing of counter-terrorism experiences, while further refining tactics, techniques, and procedures essential for effective CT (Counter-Terrorism) operations," the military said.
Training activities are heavily centered on urban combat scenarios, with a strong focus on marksmanship and close-quarters engagements. The drills also aim to give both militaries insight into each other’s operational concepts and established best practices.
Emphasizing the broader importance of the exercise, officials said, “Such joint training exercises are of vital importance in addressing evolving security challenges, improving professional military standards, and strengthening the capacity of both forces to operate in complex counter-terrorism environments,” adding that Inspired Gambit-2026 demonstrates an ongoing commitment by both countries to cooperation in pursuit of regional peace, security, and stability.
Separately, Pakistan’s navy carried out a successful test launch of the LY-80(N) surface-to-air missile in the North Arabian Sea on Saturday, highlighting long-range air defense capabilities during a large-scale naval exercise.
