Iran Hails Islamabad Talks as Start of Broader Diplomatic Process with US
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, he described the “Islamabad Talks” as an ongoing process rather than a single event, adding that the discussions “can create a sustainable framework for the interests of all parties.”
The remarks followed weekend negotiations hosted by Pakistan, which brought together US and Iranian delegations for the most significant direct engagement between the two sides since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, according to reports.
The talks reportedly took place after Pakistan helped broker a 14-day ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran on April 8, temporarily pausing a conflict that escalated following military actions involving the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28.
During the discussions in Islamabad, US Vice President JD Vance and his delegation met with an Iranian team led by parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf. The negotiations continued through the night from Saturday into Sunday but ultimately ended without a final agreement.
According to US media reports, the American delegation presented several non-negotiable positions, including demands related to Iran’s nuclear program, regional activities, and maritime access routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, though no breakthrough was achieved.
Despite the lack of an agreement, Iranian officials described the discussions as part of a continuing diplomatic track, suggesting that further engagement may follow.
